PMI’s own science: “95% fewer harmful substances”

A woman in a white lab coat, wearing safety glasses and blue gloves, looks through a microscope and takes notes. Test tubes with red caps and petri dishes stand on the table; a second person works in the background.

On its website, Philip Morris International claims that, according to laboratory tests, the aerosol from its heated tobacco product emits, on average, 95 percent fewer harmful substances than cigarette smoke, and that the company’s e-cigarettes contain, on average, 99 percent fewer harmful chemicals. Philip Morris International also states that IQOS does not adversely affect indoor air quality and is not a source of secondhand smoke.

These are company claims based on its own test results, which align seamlessly with the marketing message of “less harmful alternatives.” None of this has been properly substantiated, let alone (independently) proven.
